Benefits for Youth

The benefits that students gain through martial arts are many; martial arts is challenging.  Children trained in our martial art are trained to share, learn, teach and most importantly, to value those things that make them unique. It is our goal to provide a positive, supportive atmosphere where children have fun and develop new skills as well as develop their character.

Institute of Health and Fitness is a reinforcement of four basic living skills: discipline, honor and integrity, respect of self and others, and finally, self-confidence. Emphasis is on the individual's achievements as well as in providing an encouraging atmosphere to help the child develop both inside and out to the best of their abilities while at the same time instructing them in some proven, effective self-defense techniques.  We also covers subjects such as anger management techniques, conflict resolution and stress management which serve to reinforce character-building lessons.

About the Art

The art we have been trained in is called Comba-Tai, which translates: the grand struggle.  Our instructor is Dr. Alonzo M.  Jones, he was taught by his grandfather, Dr. S.A. Jones, whom we identify as the first Grand Patriarch of Comba-Tai.  The art was brought to American soil from Ethiopia in the 1800's by James Marshal who was Dr. S.A. Jones’ great grandfather.  James Marshal is believed to have been an Ethiopian Nobleman of the Solomic line and related to Hailie Selassie, the deposed Ethiopian Emperor.

Comba-Tai is a Christian-based art in its philosophy; however, the instructors do not lead the students in spiritual growth lessons.

The lessons we teach have been designed with students of all backgrounds, beliefs and abilities in mind.  Lessons focus on developing the technique through the student, which results in a higher sense of achievement for the student as well as a better performed, more adaptable technique.  Many arts will teach that instinctive reaction is the best defense against attack; however, the IHF concentrates on the theory that a trained and prepared mind is the best defense.
